Tom Cruise operated camera for lightsaber duel in Star Wars: Starfighter

Tom Cruise visited the set via helicopter and got involved with the filming.

Tom Cruise served as the camera operator for a lightsaber duel in the upcoming movie Star Wars: Starfighter.

According to The New York Times, the Mission: Impossible actor flew from London to the film’s nearby set via helicopter one day in November to watch director Shawn Levy and his team shoot a lightsaber duel set in water.

However, the Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker jokingly suggested that Cruise could jump on one of the cameras, and the action star happily got involved, operating the camera while up to his ankles in muddy pond water.

“Last week Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes,” Levy told the publication during a set visit. “Now when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?”

Starfighter is the first Star Wars movie to not be a sequel, prequel, or spin-off since the 1977 original, and is set five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. It revolves around a father-son dynamic, brought to life by Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray.

The sci-fi movie also stars Amy Adams, Mia Goth, Matt Smith and Aaron Pierre. Their characters and details of the plot are being kept under wraps.

During his interview, Levy explained that his boyish excitement about making movies helps him get through stressful days.

“My dad called me yesterday and asked me how I’m doing. ‘Is the job stressful? Is it hard?'” he said. “I’m like: ‘Yes, this movie is more stressful and challenging than anything I’ve ever done.’ But also, my 10-year-old self is on set with me every day. That’s how I make movies.”

Filming wrapped in December, and the movie is set to be released in cinemas in May 2027.
