Idris Elba reveals chances of Luther movie sequel are ‘very good’

Idris Elba hinted that the future is looking bright for Luther fans.

Idris Elba has revealed the chances of a second Luther movie are “looking good”.

The British actor played Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in the psychological crime thriller series between 2010 and 2019 and went on to star in the film continuation, Luther: The Fallen Sun, early last year.

In an interview with Collider, Elba hinted that a movie follow-up is in the works.

“The chances are good. The chances are very good actually. I don’t want to make any exclusive announcements, but it’s looking good for old Johnny Boy,” he stated.

When asked if the Luther team was working on a script, Elba hesitated and simply replied, “I’m personally not.”

While promoting the first Luther film, The Suicide Squad actor expressed an interest in turning it into a movie franchise.

“We do have the ambition to take it into a franchise because now that you’ve got a film landscape, you’ve got bigger budgets, but also you’ve just got more story you can tell,” he said on The One Show in March last year.

In an interview with Collider in July 2023, Elba made it clear that he wanted to make more Luther films.

“I’m hoping to make another one,” he shared. “I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed.”

Elba is currently promoting the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles, in which he voices the title character.
