The Angry Birds Movie 2 sees the birds and green pigs hit pause on their epic rivalry so they can take on the vindictive purple bird, Zeta.

Arguably, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood includes the most A-listers of any film cast in recent years.

But hitting cinemas at the around the same time as Quentin Tarantino's feature is another flick that unexpectedly rivals the drama/thriller in the big-name celebrity stakes: The Angry Birds Movie 2.

Directed by Thurop Van Orman, the animated comedy picks up where the 2016 movie ended, and features a huge array of talent, including Jason Sudeikis, who returns as angry bird Red.

Feeling smug about his heroic efforts to save Bird Island in the original story, Red is seen enjoying kicking back with his mates Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride).

However, that all changes when the birds' sworn enemy Leonard (Bill Hader), a green pig from Piggy Island, turns up out of the blue and suggests they all put their differences aside in order to figure out why enormous balls of ice from a faraway island are encroaching on their territory.

Though hesitant at first, the birds decide to consult with Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage), and once he provides a little inside knowledge, the birds and pigs, including Courtney (Awkwafina), Garry (Sterling K. Brown), and Silver (Rachel Bloom) come together to formulate a plan to infiltrate the island of mysterious purple bird Zeta (Leslie Jones), who has set up a base on the ice-covered locale and wants to usher in a new ice age with cryokinetic technology after being fed up of living by herself.

An action-packed adventure ensues, including lots of dramatic mountain climbing and cliff-diving sequences, with the drama ramping up as the team seeks to get past Zeta's eagle security guards - Glenn (Eugenio Debez), Carl (Zach Woods), and Jerry (Pete Davidson).

Children will be captivated by the slick animation, fast-paced stunts, physical humour, and toilet jokes, but the narrative really hits its stride when the birds and pigs work together to make a makeshift eagle costume as means of going undetected in Zeta's realm.

A cute side plot involving baby birds Zoe (Brooklynn Prince), Vivi (Viola Davis's daughter Genesis Tennon), and Sam-Sam (Gal Gadot's daughter Alma Varsano), is a smart addition too.

Sudeikis hits all the right notes as Red and does a good job of conveying how the bird still has some deep-seated insecurities,

Jones steals the show as the sarcastic and selfish Zeta, infusing the character with the right amount of villainous fun, while the addition of Bloom as engineering wiz Silver injects the flick with a fresh feminist angle.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 also features cameos from the likes of Lil Rel Howery, Dove Cameron, JoJo Siwa, Nicki Minaj, Tiffany Haddish, and Nicole Kidman's young daughters Sunday and Faith, but at times it can be a little bit annoying to try and pick apart all of the different voices. A few more jokes would have been nice as well.

Yet, with a 96-minute runtime and a smart soundtrack including music from David Bowie, Jimmy Buffett and Baby Shark, there is enough content to entertain kids and adults alike.
