Richard Dreyfuss plays a therapist specializing in the behavior of autistic children. He also moonlights for the police department, doing analytical workups. The story turns on a homicide involving a 9-year-old boy who was the sole witness to his parents' murder. Des- pondent over the recent loss of a child-patient to suicide, Dreyfuss reluctantly agrees to take on the case; but only at the urging of his wife (Linda Hamilton), a lawyer involved in the investigation. In helping the boy to recount his recollection of the crime, both doctor and patient come to terms with their recent losses. Featured players include John Lithgow as a state-appointed psychiatrist who would just as soon use drug therapy as a way to deal with the boy, and J. T. Walsh as the town sheriff. Bruce ("DRIVING MISS DAISY") Beresford directs -- his first since completing "RICH IN LOVE" in 1993.
