Tcheky Karyo plays the legendary visionary who foretold such events as the French Revolution, the rise of Adolph Hitler and the assassi- nation of John F. Kennedy. Michel de Nostradame was born in St. Remy de Provence in 1503 and died nearby in 1566. Disenchanted with the hypocrisy and tyranny of the Catholic Church, he used his spiritual "knowledge" and nutmeg and herbs to cure victims of the plague. During his lifetime, he was patronized by Queen Catherine of France and tortured by the Inquisition. Ultimately, he transcribed his prophecies, in a coded form "in order not to frighten the masses," and these manuscripts are currently held in the Vatican. Of the story directed by Roger ("THE SENDER") Christian: "Nostradamus was the most learned astronomer of his day. The film follows him in a reverential way, and shows how he was burdened by his gift."
