The Cement Garden

Set in a lone house amid a concrete wasteland, the story tells of four children who, upon their mother's death, bury her body in a cement box in the cellar to avoid being taken into custody by the authorities. Left to their own devices, the children start to give free vent to their sexual confusion. The catalyst to the simmering sexuality between 15-year-old brother and 16-year-old sister is when the girl's older boyfriend gets suspicious about the mother's disap- pearance. Under the direction of Andrew ("SALT ON OUR SKIN") Birkin, a Silver Bear winner as Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival (1993), the story is said to explore: "The blurred areas between genders, and the vulnerable world of puberty blues." The picture, both erotic and macabre, marks the English language debut of Gallic star Charlotte Gainsbourg.
