Ariana Grande ‘so grateful’ to win Grammy for Wicked

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Defying Gravity.

Ariana Grande feels “so grateful” to win a Grammy for her vocal performance in Wicked.

The Into You singer and her co-star Cynthia Erivo won one of the main pop categories, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, for their rendition of the show-stopping song, Defying Gravity, in the two-part movie adaptation of the popular stage musical.

Neither were present to accept the award during the Los Angeles ceremony on Sunday, however, Grande issued a statement celebrating their win on her Instagram Stories.

“This is so special 🙂 @recordingacadeny thank you so so so much!” she wrote. “Congratulations to the incredible @cynthiaerivo I love you & am so grateful to share this.”

Grande then expressed her “eternal gratitude” to the film’s “entire sound and production family” and tagged director Jon M.Chu, editor Myron Kerstein, composer Stephen Schwartz and conductor and executive music producer Stephen Oremus, among others.

Erivo, who was busy accepting an honorary award at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards on Sunday, has yet to address their Grammy win.

In the film music categories, Wicked was also nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Score Soundtrack Album for Visual Media, but it was beaten by Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners in both categories.

Wicked, which concludes with Defying Gravity, was released in November 2024, while the second part, Wicked: For Good, hit cinemas the following November.

The first instalment was a major awards season player last year, with 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Surprisingly, Wicked: For Good failed to replicate this success and received zero Oscar nominations this year.

However, Grande and Erivo were shortlisted for the Golden Globes, and the singer is currently nominated for an Actor Award.
