For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Deep beneath the earth's surface lies the city of Ember, a crowded metropolis powered by a massive generator for the past 200 years, which is slowly falling into eternal darkness. On assignment day, Ember's students line up to take part in the lottery that will decide professions for the rest of their lives. Lina (Saoirse Ronan) is devastated when she is allotted a menial job in the pipeworks, while fellow student Doon (Harry Treadaway) is equally disappointed to land the prestigious position of messenger, delivering important missives to Ember's prominent figures.
