what's the story

BASED ON A NOVEL BY NEW YORK SUPREME COURT JUSTICE EDWIN TORRES, THE STORY DEALS WITH THEMES RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES INCLUDING CORRUPT COPS, RACISM, DRUGS AND MURDER. THE TITLE DERIVES FROM THE POLICE TERM FOR A DEPOSITION AND THE ACTION REVOLVES AROUND AN OLD-GUARD COP (NICK NOLTE) UNDER QUESTIONING OVER THE MURDER OF A DRUG SUSPECT. TIMOTHY HUTTON PLAYS THE ASSISTANT D.A. WHOSE GIVEN NOLTE'S CASE BECAUSE HE'S EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETELY NAIVE AND GLOSS IT OVER. AS IT TURNS OUT, HE'S NOT SO NAIVE AND QUITE CAPABLE OF RAISING HAVOC. "THOUGH THE STORY ISN'T TRUE," SAYS DIRECTOR SIDNEY LUMET, "EVERY ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IS." THIS PICTURE MARKS HIS FIRST DIRECTING ASSIGNMENT SINCE COMPLETING "FAMILY BUSINESS" IN 1989.
